Creating a Sleep Sanctuary â Sights, Sounds and Smells
Look around your bedroom and feel how the space feels. If youâre not in your room, close your eyes, take a deep breath and imagine it. Ask the following questions:
How does it feel?
How does it smell?
What does it look like?
What noises can you hear around you when you lie down to sleep?
Does it make you feel peaceful, at ease?
Does it make you feel safe?
This is about using your unique senses to work out what is right for you. Creating a sleep sanctuary is particularly important if youâre a Sensitive Sleeper (see here) for whom sights, sounds and smells are prime considerations.
Iâm inviting you to feel your sleep space. Is it cluttered and untidy? Are the colours restful and peaceful or clashing and overstimulating? Do you have visible signs of work in your bedroom â piles of books and papers, a laptop or other electronic devices? Do you have a TV in your bedroom? Are piles of laundry or childrenâs toys in sight?
Your bedroom should be a place of rest and relaxation so the first step is to declutter and tidy it up. Ensure that work, the laundry basket or childrenâs toys are firmly out of sight. If the last thing you see before shutting your eyes reminds you of your daily life then obviously it will be harder to leave the day behind and enter deep sleep. The same goes for TVs, laptops and mobile devices, so remove them from your bedroom.
